Rendering text to texture

Hi Im making a game which requires a certain amount of dynamic text to be rendered in a 3D scene. eg. Writing on walls Is there a way of rendering a font to a texture? At the moment Im using D3DXCreateText to create a mesh for each string of text. This works fine for small bits of text but its definitely overkill for what I need (a flat 2d texture with the text on it) cheers ;)
