Rendering Large Terrain?

Can u guys provide an Idea on how to render Large terrains in DX.. so far i only knw how to render brute force terrain that uses vertex and index buffer but there is a limitation in Vertex/Primitive count when using brute force any terrain algorithm to suggest? thanks

And finally you can also load your terrain in chunks, allowing very large and detailed terrains without being forced to load everything at once. But the other recommendations are the place to start.
