bitmap data

I'm trying to create a wrapper class for reading in bitmaps. I'm getting an error during the destructor part of the bitmap data. I've looked at tutorial which store the bitmap data as: unsigned char* data; then use: data = (unsigned char*)malloc(bitmapInfoHeader->biSizeImage); to load it. Can I use the "new" operator to do this? What is the best way to free it if I just use malloc?
