I have discovered that my C# .NET applications, some big some small, usage up RAM between 10 MB and 20 MB. Why does it take so much or is this quite normal to see for an application? My main question is what general things can I do to lower the memory usage?

Short version: that's normal.

Mid-length version: Don't use Task Manager to try and work out how much memory your application is actually using, there are a variety of reasons why it would look like your app is using more than it really is such as the way Windows and the CLR handle memory allocation. Having said that for a .NET app to appear to be using 10-20mb in the task manager is normal and nothing to worry about.

Long version: How much memory does my .NET application use?
"Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a bygone vexation stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it's my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V.".....V
