textures going to 12-bit?
hrmm.
this texture looks like its 16 different colors of red, huh?
i thought it was 32 bit and interpolated from 0-255.
any idea why texturemapping in ogl might cause this?

oops...
but hey, it''s happening again...
is the internal format to low?
the foreground image is just the bkg (window and all) tm to a quad.
the bkg is smooth, why not the tm?
You have to use GL_RGBA8 for internal format instead of GL_RGBA.
Driver can choose any RGBA format for GL_RGBA, and for many 3D cards it is GL_RGBA4 (16bit - 4:4:4:4).
