I agree with Sydan:
1- Learn theory.
(All you can read and understand, and read all until you understand it, it''s the MOST IMPORTANT.)
2-Pick both API and remember that using Direct3D means that you like MS and support it fully, agreeing with all missactions MS have done in the past, in the present and will surely do in the future.
(And also note that Direct3D is a copy of OpenGL now.)
Anyway if you plan to support your lovely MS for any reason I cannot understand, feel free to use only Direct3D.
