Ok I have a few questions so here we go. First is What is direct x and where or what should i use to learn it? Second is what is the best program to use if i want =ed to make a game like ages of empires? Direct X, that is a 32 bit API for the Windows platform. It provides components for directly accessing the various hardware of the computer.

There are no especially made programs for creating games like that as far as I know. If you wanted to, you could code your own.

If you want a 3d level editor, check the game you want to make levels for, they usually come with them. If not, try to learn a little about the types of files that where used in the game(s) you want. It would help to have the source code for the game too. Then you could code your own.
