Hi, is there a way to use DirectX9 (or maybe 8), like DirectSound to extract the frequencies of a given sound at a given time?

Yes, but it isn't technically a DirectSound task. You need to run a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis against the sound data to extract the frequency bands and their phases of a waveform.

While DirectSound doesn't provide any utilities for the actual processing, you can perform FFT analysis real-time by creating a capture buffer and processing chunks of the sound data as it comes along.
