Is there a way to set a components minimum size in java?
I need to figure out a way to set a components minimum size. I'm using gridbag layout, (yeah, yeah, i know.) and every post i find says to set the preferred size manually or uses some roundabout paint method that i don't have the knowledge to use. I have already tried manually setting the preffered size, it doesn't work. I tried looking up if there was a setMinimumSize method under component in the java library, but there doesnt appear to be.
On a personal note, I personally feel that any programmer who refuses to learn how to communicate in plain english should be shot in front of their family and friends. I spent nearly a month teaching myself java, and when i finally think i have a handle on simple, bare bones GUI building, the program doesn't work. Its not a glitch, it is almost like Sun is deliberately fucking with people who want to use their stuff. Maybe this isn't what programmers want to hear considering they consider Sun to be the underdog in the fight against microsofts arcane gobbeldygook, but they seriously dropped the ball on gridbag.
My head is filled with months worth of useless garbage that has nothing to with even the simplest game design from three different languages. I have two computer science major friends who claim they want to game developers, but after four years with a 3.5+ grade point average, they seem to know less than i do, and i have never taken a class. They don't know anything about how to use advanced or custom java layout managers like gridbag or absolute positioning, they don't know how to use VB, Visual Studio, directX, OpenGL, or modeling software. They don't know anything about sound or other multimedia, they don't know networking or have the first clue about creating multiplayer games. Is this unusual? Or is this just the amount of effort it takes to learn how to program games?
I have only the barest hint at what you need to know to program games. Anybody got a list of some basic tools? I'm getting VB and a good C++ compiler, and i already have Visual Studio . NET, for all the good its doing me.
Thanks for listening to me rant, i hope it was entertaining.
"...and lo a mass of forsaken programmers, jaded consumers, and xenophobic luddites shall appear before the gates of microsoft. The way will be made clear by their rightious anger, blood will rain from the heavens, and the tyrant shall fall, his corpse descretated, and his hair left untouched as a reminder that the emporer had no clothes, and an even worse haircut."
AHA
Apparently i was looking in AWT instead of swing. JComponent lets you change the minimum size, Component does not. Oops.

Most impressive.
But yes, a course in computer science isn't going to teach you how to make games. It'll teach you how to write code and possibly put you on the write path of actually programming a game, but probably no more.
Then again, your friends could just be slackers :P
