Hello everyone, I have been programming C++ for a couple of months now and I have decided that I have enough knowledge to go into programming games with C++. I have always wanted to do this since I was a little kid. So I'm just letting it be known that I'm here. I also would like to know where some beginner opengl/directx tuts are and what would be a good first project for my game programming. Thanks in advance. You can go to the =Article section of GDNet, they have stuff on DirectX and OpenGL. You should also check out the Forum FAQ.

OpenGL: NeHe
DirectX: 32bits

Go with Pong, Tetris, or Tic-Tac-Toe for your first game IMO.

Hello. Welcome to the forums. I would say pong or tetris. Also have you looked into sdl? It is a very easy way to get sprites up on the screen and you can use it with c++ and mostly any compiler.

Hi and welcome to the forums Renegade! I'd agree that NeHe is the place to start for good and detailed tutorials on OpenGL. It seems there are more books on DirectX than there are tutorials, so you can have a look at the MSDN documentation at microsoft.com or buy a book. If you buy a book on DirectX, I'd suggest Introduction to 3D Game Programming with DirectX 9.0 by Frank Luna. You might also want to check out 3D Math Primer for Graphics and Game Development for the 3D math and trig if it'll help. As your first project, I'd also say to go with Pong, Breakout, or Tetris, most of the classic 2D games.

I thought about making a thread about "beginner games to make" but never had the balls to do it. Here are some of the things I came up with:

Tic-Tac-Toe
Pong
Tetris
Breakout
Space Invaders
Pacman
Simon
Solitare
Most Casino games
Yatzee
Checkers
Connect-4
Othello
Stratego
Hell, any board game
Puzzle game clones
mm..Chinese Checkers

And the list goes on. Just beware that life will be much easier if you stick to 2D for a while, and then move on. There's a heck of a lot more to games than "omg! prettay graphics!", and if you get distracted by DX initialization (for example) I can pretty much promise you you'll get nothing done.

That said, I'd personally suggest looking into SDL (Simple Directmedia Layer which is a powerful multiplatform library that'll make your rendering and input gathering much easier. Additionally, it will combine well later with OGL should you choose the communist route.

The key thing to remember is go slowly, and make sure you understand everything before continuing. As they say, the road to failure is paved with great ambitions!
