OpenGL Fast font rendering + wxWidgets

I'm coding an app right now that needs to render fonts. I've read that bitmapped fonts are the normal way to do this in OpenGL. This is problematic for me though -- all the bitmapped font examples I've seen are windows specific, and I'm using the wxWidgets toolkit to try and keep my code crossplatform. The other problem is that even if I do code a bitmapped fonts implementation for each platform, integration with wxWidgets will be a problem. wxWidgets sets up a lot of nice dialogs automatically for me, like letting the user choose fonts. So then I have a bitmapped font implementation, plus the work of getting the wxFont class to work with each implementation. Is there an easier way? Pulling in a new library still requires the glue work between it and wxFont. I'm using textured fonts right now but they look like crap. :P
