Space Sim Basics

I've been working on my models for my next project, a space sim. But Ive been racking my brain on how to develop the 3d world for this space sim. Can anyone give me the basics on how to develop this, Ive done 4 2d projects but this is my 1st dive into the 3d space sim world. Oh BTW, this is supposed to be a fully developed space enviroment, along the lines of Freespace and such. Thanks in advance for any feedback

What particular aspect is puzzling you and have you got any previous experience working with 3D graphics?

I'd recomend using an existing engine instead of constructing your own from scratch anyway, Ogre being one example of something you could use.
