What exactly happens when msg.wParam is returned at the end of WinMain. Is it totally necessary?

Returning the value of the WPARAM from the WM_QUIT message signifies that your application has terminated normally. If you return 0 it may signify that the application terminated before it reached the message loop.

It doesn't really matter.
It can be helpful if you launch that executable from another process and have the return values actually mean something (i.e. the exe did as desired or a particular error occured).
