I'm trying to learn Swing, and I am hoping to make a extremely simple Minesweeper clone. I've read through some guides on Swing, but haven’t been able to find anything more orientated making something like Minesweeper. Does anyone know of some good tutorials for making very simple games with Swing? In order to make a standalone app, I take it Swing is the best option?

There are other options, but for starters Swing is the best, yes. When you've read through the Java Tutorial series on java.sun.com, you should be pretty much ready to go to implement Minesweeper, though, since Minesweeper is a bunch of buttons and a two-dimensional array with the locations of the mines.

By the way, when the user clicks on of the buttons, you'll probably want the button to disappear and some icon to come up instead. Perhaps the setBorderPainted(boolean) and setIcon(Icon) methods could come in handy for that. I know Swing can be a little overwhelming for beginners, but don't worry, you'll get used to it.
