In Game Fur

Ok... I'm creating a game which involves a LOT of Furry creatures. So, I was wondering how to do a fur system in a game.... I've noticed it features pretty heavily in Conker Reloaded, so, are there any suggestions as to how to get a similar effect?

A simpler (and less good looking) approach is to store fur-length in the alpha channel of the diffuse texture, and then draw the fur multiple times with alpha testing enabled - scale the geometry slightly upwards and lower the alpha threshold for each pass.
