Camera Translation with SampleFramework

Im wondering what im doing wrong here and i cannot seem to figure out just where i can do translation on the camera with the sampleframework. i normally do something like viewMatrix.Translate(x,y,z); but anytime i do it with the sampleframework it just does absolutely nothing to the viewmatrix. anyways here is my main problem. i have created a Terrain using a .bmp heightmap file and i got it to display it on the screen but its upside down for some reason. Or the camera need's to be raised on the Y axes to get to the flat ground. regardless im trying to get a FPS camera setup with my terrain but im having no luck. any help i would appreciate thanks ..
