Error during alt+tab in D3D8

Hi I'm programming a 2D game in D3D8 and I have a problem when the game loses focus due to alt+tab (when in fullscreen of course). I know what it means when the device goes into lost state and all that. The game can actually handle alt+tab in fullscreen with no problem. The error only occurs if the game runs in the same resolution as the Windows desktop. I have confirmed this with another machine that runs a different resolution, it has the same alt+tab problem if the game runs at the same resolution as Windows. When the alt+tab occur I can see that Windows changes focus to another app, but the image from the game remains on top so I can't see anything else. But the game does no longer have focus. I had to memorize how to kill the game using the Task Manager without actually seeing it. As I said everything works just fine in any other resolution, the game gets minimized and focus is on another app. When clicking on the minimized game it pops up again and runs perfectly. Any ideas?
