2d vector based collision

when supplied with two vectors (one being the vector to test collision with, and another which is made from the players original position and their requested position), and a bounding sphere around the player how would you test to see: A) If they collide, and where? B) Where the nearest point back along the movement vector is before the collision occured I would also appreciate any online resources on the subject of collision.
