Determining current mouse position

Hey, I am writing a GLUT application, and I was wondering if there was a simple way to determine "where" the mouse is in 3-space at any given moment. In other words, read from the depth buffer, using the known x-y screen values, and determine the intersection point of the mouse at that given ray. Thanks in advance!

the picking feature in opengl gives you exact results from the way you explained
