Parametric/procedural modelling plugins

Hi, I'm doing a search on parametric/procedural modelling plugins that utilize this modelling method and what are the working "algorithms"/theory behind them. (I'm not necessarily talking about plant modelling and L-system specific stuff) What I'm more interested is how for example plugins like the Digimations's "Head Designer" is working, is it really based on parametric modelling or is it just a tool that "stitches" together different meshes? And if they are not (that is, building meshes that are based in mathematic equations) how are they able to effectivelly control the mesh with a variety of parameters resulting in a seamless mesh at the same time? Reply if you think that my question was too vague, and i'll try to make it more specific thanks!
