timing functions

I find the unix tool 'time' to be the best rough estimate tool. After that, standard unix gprof [which comes with dev-cpp as well I believe] for more fine grained estimation.

Are you talking about timing your code? What platform are you using? In Windows there are a couple of ways you can measure the length of time functions take to run. You could use the timeGetTime API call, or one of the high performance counters (look up QueryHighPerformanceCounter).
