I'm just looking for opinions on my design. I have two single-paged tests: one here, and the other here. The only difference between the two is that one has a black background and the other has a blue background. I'm trying to design a page with a lighter background since I always make pages with black backgrounds but I left a sample with the black for comparison. Are there improvements to the color scheme I can make? How about for the design overall?

The buttons on the left seem like their text is "faded" because there isn't much contrast between the text color and the background color of the button. Also, this is probably just me being stupid but an overabundance of USA flag paraphernalia has made averse to red white and blue color schemes.

EDIT: I also like the blue background better than the back. Also, the design is pretty simplistic but it's laid out fine. Simplicity is fine anyway.

All this is in my opinion, of course.

Three people told me that the blue one was too much 'Go America!' which was not even in my mind when I made it [sad] Last night I asked my friend what she though and working with her I came up with this. I like the blue background with the teal inset but something bothers me with the green and light blue headers.

I think that color scheme is nicer than the other two you linked before. You might want to take a look at the color wheel, I think the art teacher in grade school mentioned something about using opposite ends in order for contrast and to avoid picking colors that were right next to each other something something something..

This link seems to have a bit of general color scheme suggestions.

I am not an artist, however. [smile]

You want contrast between the text and its background in this case, not between the backgrounds of the menu, the paragraphs, and the page.

Try making the background colors of everything closer... don't jump so much.

I can only offer two things: firstly, the text boxes leak out of the bar on the left in IE; secondly, I have a deeply ingrained hatred of Times New Roman [wink]

Yeah, I know about the form leakage in IE. IE doesnt support the max-width style it seems. It also indents all of the entries like it's not supposed to. My plan was to first get a good look for the site then work out the bugs in IE [smile]

As for your hate for Times New Roman, change your user stylesheet!

Since my last few designs I've decided to simplify my life a little and by trying to make a good simple color scheme first. I came up with these (I'm posting them mostly to show how I progressed):

Blue Test #3 -
I think the jump to the darker color kills it. The reason I'm posting it is my favorite part is the menu. This one is an analogous scheme.

Blue Test #4 -
Every color here has the same hue, with the exception of the links which are whatever your default is for your browser. I was told this one was too un-masculine for me.

Blue Test #5 -
Every color has the same hue as before but they are more saturated and have less value than before.

Blue Test #6 -
I liked the last one so I decided to add the complementary color to it. I really like the menu for this one but the orange titles look sort of odd to me. Does anyone else feel this way too?

Am I making progress here or I am suffering from more of the same problem?

I actually think this is the best of them, except for the white background. To me it just seams out of place... maybe to much border, or maybe no tie in to the menu... which leads me also to say that the menu items seem to just float on the background with no container. While not necissarily bad, it's not something I prefer on the pages that I design..

I've very fond of the fifth one. All the colours seem calm between each other and it doesn't strain your eyes [smile].... Did you get a name change?

Colin, I think you'll be interested in this link. I know it's saved me much headache.

I agree with Rob about the 5th one.

And welcome to the group! Rob, you, and me. All three big on web stuff... :)

I like the blue background, which gives it less contrast.

Also, I wouldn't use such a bright shade of red. Its a little hard on the eyes. Other than that, it looks good.[edit: nevermind, I didn't notice the other examples. I like #5 too!]

I like 4 better than 5. 4 is easier to read. I presume that the page is supposed to be read?

Rob, yes, I got a name change. I've wanted one for a while and when Magmai changed to his real name I decided that now is the time. [smile]

Thanks for the opinions everyone. I dont think I'm going to make any more variations on this same design and since people seemed to like it, I think I'm going to use #4 for my site. I'll eventually set up a system so that registered users can change to a different style as well.

And thank you very much, Charles, for that link!

One word of advice to the #4 one, I'd use some light shade of grey to not blare at you (instead of the white). Right now, the white seems to be too distracting.
