[java] Unexplained slow down of an applet

Hi I've written a pair of applications that communicate with each other over the network (i.e. my home LAN). The client has a GUI and can be run either as an application or an applet. The server does not have a GUI and can only be run as an application. When the client is run as an applet through a web page, performance is reasonable. However, when I start the server application the applet becomes extremely unresponsive. When the client is run as an application, performance is equally reasonable and it does not drop, at least not noticeably, when I start the server application. I don't see a significant drop in performance even I am running three clients and the server. Therefore, why is the applet running so slowly? Also, a few things about the synthesis of both the server and the client. The server is multi-threaded and uses the following threads: a. One thread that continually checks for new connections. b. Many threads depending on the number of users (i.e. one thread per user). c. One thread for updating all the clients connected to the server. The client is also multi-threaded and uses the following threads: a. One thread that continually checks for and responds to server messages.
