Urgent Java Swing help: changing and displaying the contents of a JPanel

I can't figure this out for the life of me. I have a JPanel that's been added to the center section of my applet with a BorderLayout, and a label is added to that panel. However, what code should I use that removes of that panel's components, adds new ones, and displays the results immediately? Here is the code I have beent rying:
   	    upperPanel.removeAll();
   	    upperPanel.add(new JTextField("Hi."));
   	    upperPanel.repaint();

However, what this does is makes the upper panel go blank, and then I have to resize the applet window in order for the text field to show up. How do I make it show up automatically?
