Hi, I am currently creating a simple 2d scroller in java and in need of a good reference to game programming techniques. A book that strictly justs gives the reader techniques to solve common game problems such as collision detection, map scrolling, and other very related game play properties. This would be an ideal book for me at this time. I am not seeking a game programming book strictly for java but rather a book that addresses many game topics and situations, explaining ONLY CONCEPTS. For instance, if a player x shoots multiple missiles how would one go about and detect if player has more ammo, if bullet hits edge of screen, or how to keep track of each and every missile to determine if they hit something or not. Also, if there are data structure topics related to game play techniques, that too would greatly benefit me. I know I have not been too specific, but if anyone on these forums can help, I will greatly appreciate it! thnkx... Geo

I found Core Techniques and Algorithms in Game Programming to be very good for general game programming concepts.

Good book, but it's largely focused 3D games (though there is a 2D section, and many of the techniques are applicable to 2D).

You might want to take a look at Game Coding Complete, 2nd Ed. by Mike McShaffry - it's not really about java though.
