How to convert a variable of type Image in J2ME into PNG (or JPG, GIF, etc.)? Is there a library out there that one could use?

In theory, on devices where you can access the pixel data (with MIDP 2.0 or proprietary APIs), you could write your own png (or any other format) encoder. (info on image formats).

But what are you trying to accomplish?, because there might be a better way.

Well you would still need to do something with the png.
while most devices have sms support, mms and/or file access is still very rare.
