maskable and non-maskable multisampling. differece is??

Hello, I'm trying to understand the difference between non-maskable multisampling and maskable. When I want to turn on anti aliasing, which one do I need? What does 2x anti-aliasing map to? what does 4x anti-aliasing map to? In games when you turn on anti-aliasing is that masked multisampling or non-masked?

I think nonmaskable doesn't play nice with multiple render targets. So stuff like shadow mapping comes out wierd. At least that's what I've observed.
