good ol' heat wave 2d effect

Does anyone remember or could point me to a good example of a heat wave effect? Right now I am just blitting horizontel offsets of the image but it looks cheesy. I remember seeing them in the good ol' days of the SNES.

Try sine waving your vertical offset too
Ya, I ended up doing something like that. Looks pretty decent.
