Somewhat complicated color keying

Heya, I'm trying to draw a certain area of a picture (which i get from an alpha map) with any color. I've tried to figure out how to do it with stencil maps, but I'm not sure how to draw only the opaque areas from the alpha map to the stencil buffer - the examples I can find writes whole triangles to the buffer, but they don't take texture into consideration. First of all, does this make any sense? :) And second, anyone have any idea how I should do it?
