The ID3DXSprite library is good for some things, but if you are trying to create a 2D game with advanced special effects, then you will find ID3DXSprite is lacking in features.

Facewound has an impressive 2D game engine using shaders. See if you can learn anything by browsing the forums. Also, I am working on a 2D game engine with pixel shaders and the like, but it won't be available until after 4e4. However, if you have any specific questions I would be glad to answer them.

Finally, I have heard about Torque 2D, but I do not know if it supports shaders. You may want to look into it.

ID3DXSprite is great. If you want the most advanced stuff like the pixel shaders and whatnot, you'll need something else though. I find the transparency capabilities and speed enough.
