Hello, Does anyone have any ideas how we would go about generating nice looking water effects without using shaders (for a ps2 project). At the moment we're using an animated water texture on a mesh with points equally spaced in X and Z, and animated in Y using sin waves based on time and there location. Works ok-ish, but we're having problems getting an animated water texture which loops well. Cheers, Richard.

Probably the most obvious and visually appealing effect is a reflection of some kind. If you can spare the overhead, you could reflect the entire scene (probably render to a texture and then map it onto the water). Otherwise, if you're rendering an outdoor scene, just mapping the sky texture onto the water (perhaps with a few highlights for the sun's reflection) can produce some pleasant results.

The techniques you use will probably depend on what kind of water surfaces you're dealing with. If we're talking puddles, you could use a pre-rendered cubemap to reflect the local environment, but this wouldn't be suitable for larger expanses.

If you're rendering large expanses of water, just try to simulate some of the effects we see in life. For example, along a shallow shoreline the sea is almost completely transparent, but it becomes increasingly opaque further out. This can easily be approximated with simple blending.

And perhaps Google for 'caustics' too.
