its a s3 proSavage, pretty rubbish but i have a laptop so its not upgradeable unfortunately. am i correct in thinking that Cg will only run on fairly high end cards?

Well, s3 Savage doesn't support vertex or pixel shaders, so you won't be able to run Cg programs. Cg runs Ati Radeon 8500+ (except for pixel shaders in OpenGL) and GeForce 3/4Ti and up. If you are going to upgrade sooner or later, make sure you pick a card with at least Shader Model 2.0 support (that means, Radeon 9500/GeForce FX or newer).
