keyPress and screenRefresh not coinciding

My teamate and I have made a console game. We have graphics using ascii in a 2d array for our world. Each square of our 32x32 world is a 7x11 2d array that contains the ascii image of our grass, player, etc. Our problems is that if you press the movement keys too fast your character keeps moving after you stop pressing the keys because it can't update the screen fast enough to stay with you. We only display the area around the player not the whole map. I am not sure about how I should fix this. Can I do some timer thing maybe? I am not sure how I would implement that. I hope this is a fairly common problem newbies have because there is too much code to display it in here.
