3D coordinates to screen coordiantes

In almost every RPG style game, there are always 3D objects on the screen with text hovering above them, such as a person on the screen, then when you rollover them their name appears directly above them. I assume this is done by taking 3D coordinates and changing them into screen coordiantes and just using ID3DXFont. Is the easiest way to achieve this effect by reversing a picking ray sample and using ID3DXFont or is there a different way to do this?
