Player Control (3rd-Person Adventure) Info/Tutorials

Hi, I'm interested in creating a player control system in similar style to a 3rd-person adventure game (eg: Sly Cooper, Maximo, Mario 64), and I was wondering if there are any resources out there on this subject (books, tutorials, papers, etc)? Some of the programming topics include: - collisions - animation control - state machine for the control and character - player interaction with the world (jumping, pickups, grabbing ledges, etc) Player control can make or break an adventure/platformer game; learning how to make a nice player control system would be great. Thanks for the help.
