Vertex Selection(picking) Algorithm

I remember OpenGL having a mechanism to allow selection(picking) of 3D points with the mouse(Involving name lists SelectionModes e.t.c). Is there something similar in DirectX. I've searched the forum but I couldn't find sth relevant. Any help or link whould be appreciated. Thank you :)
