what does that sdk platform do anyway?

The term is platform SDK.

The platform SDK is all of the documentation, samples and necessary files you need to build applications that run on windows. Microsoft used to have a lot of different SDKs in circulation, so they fused them together into a single reference - the platform SDK.

I got my visual 6 for free but he paid for it I think so it's okay
try download.com I think is the site, see if u can find a trial for it there
