Is there the possibility to use normal maps without having to use own pixel shaders ? i.e. just use them like textures via some extension maybe ? googling about this topic hasnt been sucessful for more than an hour maybe I could use that for implenting lighting to our volume renderer : picture

Ehm, what TomasH suggested does use normalmaps(it computes the dot product between a light vector and a normal map). Bumpmapping is used as a generic term, nowadays most times when someone says bumpmapping means normalmapping.
