There's also this book (which some people seem not to like), and this book, which is much heavier and not geared towards beginners. There are other articles in the gdnet archives which may be relevant as well.
A simple pool sim can probably be done with only basic knowledge of physics and collision detection. But a more or less complete simulation - with full 3d motion, bouncing, spin, friction, rolling, and so on - would be quite complex.
