ID3DXFont PreloadCharacters

Anyone know of any documentation on how to use the PreloadCharacters function in the ID3DXFont interface? The documentation on MSDN isn't any help at all. The parameters are "Identifier (ID) of the first/last character to be loaded into video memory", but where do I find these ids?
