Best uv mapping tool

I apologize if this has been asked a thousand times. What is the best texture mapping tool? I'm using Max 7 to model, but I find the UVW tools in this package to be time consuming to use (I'm trying to map a 2000 poly character). I tried the Bodypaint 3D automatic mapper and although its great if you're using a 3D paint program, it doesn't seem to produce optimal results. Any thoughts?

When Max8 comes out, you'll be able to texture a character in merely 30 seconds without stretching (it's automatic, too). It's called pelt mapping.

But for now, I'm not sure if there is a simple, fast, and easy solution for texturing. Planar maps can usually help, as you can select all of the faces you want individually.

Ultimate Unwrap 3d should be adequate for your needs. I've used it for a couple of years now and liked it so far. It's fairly easy to learn and use. Takes me 2-3 hours to make a uv-map for a 2000 polygon model. I don't know if that's slow or fast but it's fast enough for me. You have to buy the program if you want to use it because you can't save anything in the demo version but it's pretty cheap.

I'm not completely sure what you're looking for but if I had to recommend a UV-mapping program, this would be it.
