Keeping track of game objects & collisions

Can someone post some links to articles on data structures to use for keeping track of objects and polygons for doing efficient collision detection. Im looking for a structure where i can group my objects into sections so i dont have to check all my objects for collisions, just the ones that are in the area closest to an object, Thanks
