when is this standard going to become standard? The latest nVidia SDK isn't compliant with Microsofts DXViewer SAS or vice-versa. I got shaders working in my app but I gotta a pick side!

I suppose it depends on what Shader IDE you intend on using. If you intend on using Nvidia's FX Composer, you will probably want to stick with their annotations. Hopefully, Nvidia will agree with MS on the standards soon and begin to update their SDK.

FxComposer was built on an early version of DXSAS, around v0.85.
What is shipping in the SDK today is DXSAS v1.0.
v1.0 is a significant cleanup of the standard but some features that were in version 0.85 were chosen not to standardize at this time. (primarily scripting)
Some people are simply using the v0.85 scripting model with v1.0.
I cannot personally speak to future versions of FxComposer.
