Hello, I would like to know what is the recommended -and fastest- method to display a simple background image with opengl while drawing a 3D cube in front of it.

Just use a single quad and render you background image to that quad and then draw your 3D cube in front of that. You don't need fancy stuff like VBO's ect.. Use immediate mode and you will be fine.

//quick code snippet of a quad
glPushMatrix();
glTranslatef(0.0f, 0.0f, -10.0f);
//add texturing stuff here like glEnable() ect...
glBegin(GL_QUADS);
glTexCoord2f(0.0f, 0.0f);glVertex3f(0.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f);
glTexCoord2f(1.0f, 0.0f);glVertex3f(3.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f);
glTexCoord2f(1.0f, 1.0f);glVertex3f(3.0f, 3.0f, 0.0f);
glTexCoord2f(0.0f, 1.0f);glVertex3f(0.0f, 3.0f, 0.0f);
glEnd();
glPopMatrix();
//shut down texturing here

Then use a GLUT cube if you are using GLUT or just figure out the vertices for your cube and position it front of the quad... HTH?
