I've been experimenting with lighting methods in java and I'd like to hardware accelerate my triangle drawing. The problem is that I have strange methods for turning the 3D coordinates into 2D so I'm not sure that a 3D accelerater would work. However I do need to use a Zbuffer so I am not sure that simple 2D graphics would work either. Basically what I want is a hardware accelerated 2D flatshading method for triangles that uses a depth buffer. Does that exist?

Sure, just use OpenGL via LWJGL and use that for hardware acceleration. Ignore the 3d projection bits and just draw all your triangles in screenspace (after your own custom projection method) and the depth buffer will work fine.
