Well... the best way to learn is by doing.

When you tried to learn SDL, did you type any actual programs in? You dont have to know what half of what those things are, just what a SDL_Surface is and how you put it on your screen.

Did you try the cone3d tutorials for SDL? I found them to be very good.
I assume you have some understanding of 3D geometry. If not, find a decent maths book and try to understand as much about geometry as you can. In particular, points in space, vectors and trigonometry (sines, cosines and tangents)
