SDL_Event global; while(k == true) { if ( global.type == SDL_QUIT ) { k = false; SDL_Quit(); } while(SDL_PollEvent(&global)) { if ( global.type == SDL_KEYDOWN ) { if ( global.key.keysym.sym == SDLK_ESCAPE ) { k = false; SDL_Quit(); } } } } return(0); } The debugger relayed that global was being used without being defined;how can I fix this?

You need to change your code so that you run SDL_PollEvent(&global) before you check if global.type == SDL_QUIT

EDIT: Why do you have a second while loop? Last I knew your code would work fine if you did this:
SDL_Event global;
while(k == true)
{
SDL_PollEvent(&global);
if(global.type == SDL_QUIT)
{
k = false;
SDL_Quit();
}

if(global.type == SDL_KEYDOWN)
{
if(global.key.keysym.sym == SDLK_ESCAPE)
{
k = false;
SDL_Quit();
}
}
}
return(0);
}
