transparent object

This is no doubt a proper newbie question but I'm having real trouble with this so any help would be much appreciated. Basically I want to render an object semi transparent and assume I can/should so this using SetRenderState(). The thing is I cant work out the details of exactly how to do this can anyone help me please? Thanks Paul edit: I'm coding in unmanaged C++ btw.

Read the SDK and the accompanying samples. Pay attention to alpha transparency and alpha blending.
