Rendering all 4 channels to a surface

Hi, it's terribly hard to search such specific items on the web so I hoped I could get an answer for my question here :) What I want to do is render to a surface, but for all channels; so red, green, blue and alpha. Is this possible? Since a surface is capable of storing all 4 of these I'd hope so, but I'm not sure as it isn't explained anywhere. Just for clarification; I'm rendering 3d geometry with texture maps, and I want to render them to a surface, keeping the alpha channel rather as using it for blending the texture.
