kind of a selfish question.. but i wanna be prepared before i go through the trouble of learning/implementing a big algo. So if i wanted to remake world of warcraft, which spacial partitioning system should I learn? Basically i'm going for the typical rgp, with expanses of terrain and cities. So for terrain, quadtrees would be my best bet, but every once in a while there will be a castle or dungeon that might necessitate octree or portal partitioning... and what about bsp? any suggestions?

Quadtree sounds good. It is going to take you several tries to make a game like WoW, so I wouldn't worry about getting something as trivial as partitioning perfect on the first try.
